Of the current generation to be trained in the art of glassblowing, Jesse Reece is something of an artistic mugwump, designing otherworldly vases that steer clear of gimmicky and contemporary fads.

Reece specializes in a method called off-hand glass blowing which he first studied at Goddard College, a progressive school in Vermont founded in the Thirties. It took roughly two years, Reece says, “just to understand the technique and to gain control of the material.” Off-hand glass blowing is accomplished by scooping molten glass from a furnace at 2500 degrees and blowing through a heavy metal pipe to form the desired shape.

Over the last few years Reece has developed several styles: multicolored works, and “crackled” or distressed glass pieces made by freezing the material at various intervals. But Reece’s heart lies with his clear “absolutely clear” creations.

Hands Gallery is proud to represent the brilliant and luscious work of Jesse Reese.
